Low row

The low row is a row variation where you row upwards into a shrug movement. This exercise will involve the traps, rhomboids, and rear delts.

To execute this movement, the low-row machine provides just the excellent stability with the chest support pad.

This exercise is just as fatiguing as other chest-supported rows, which is acceptable.

Not every gym has this exact movement, but it can be replicated with cables or another type of movement challenging the same muscles.

Facts:

  • Compound movement
  • Shortened position
  • Stable

Alternatives:

  • Kelso shrugs
  • Wide cable rows

Kelso shrugs are an isolation movement but targets the traps as well. It is more accessible, but less effective for overall back development.

Wide cable rows have quite similar movement paths, but they are more accessible and do not provide as much stability.
