Kelso shrug

The Kelso shrug is a shrugging movement that targets the upper traps by retracting the scapula.

This shrug variant is modified to be more stable and align well with the upper traps. This variant is more stable than other shrugging exercises.

You can implement Kelso shrugs after a set of rows to finish the upper traps. The traps are a big muscle, but unlike a row, it is an isolation movement so that it will be less fatiguing.

To execute this exercise, you need a bench and dumbbells. The bench has to be on incline. It is overall pretty accessible, just like most other shrug variants.

Facts:

  • Isolation
  • Shortened position
  • Easy to perform

Alternatives

  • Dumbbell / barbell shrug

The dumbbell and barbell shrugs are almost identical; they are effective for the traps, too. These alternatives are more accessible and easier to perform.
